COMMUNITY FARM

The farm on Reinhard Street consists of approximately 30 parcels of formerly vacant land, which had been abandoned for years and was a site for illegal dumping.  The farm’s founder, Ben Miller, has been present in the neighborhood since 2006, getting to know the neighbors while also finding potential in these vacant lots.

After co-founding The People’s Kitchen, he was inspired to grow unique, interesting foods and expose people to a variety of cuisines, while also emphasizing culturally important ingredients to the diverse communities surrounding the garden.

In 2021, Ben, along with two paid workers, Antoinette and Jose, and several volunteers started transforming the lots into garden spaces. Dozens of committed neighbors and volunteers have since expanded the garden, focusing on addressing food insecurity in the neighborhood. The produce grown in these gardens is available for all community members, and is also used to prepare meals to combat hunger in underserved communities across the city.

EDUCATION

We currently welcome a variety of school and homeschool groups, vocational students, interns and community service at our space to learn about issues of food justice and food waste in the city of Philadelphia. Volunteers will also participate in a wide variety of gardening and agricultural skills. Sharing skills and knowledge with our volunteers is a huge part of our mission to address the inequities in our current food system and to shift the power back to historically marginalized communities.

MEAL DISTRIBUTION

Reinhard Street has a mission of  becoming a hub for neighbors to eat high quality, nutritious food for free. We are in the process of seeking funding to complete construction of a commercial kitchen on the farm site, where we will cook the food we grow to feed the community. Currently, we distribute the fresh produce to our neighbors and store them in our community fridge, where anyone can take what they need.
